I had the same problems. Now I created two kit documents (One with standard client and one with basic client) which are exactly the same. The only difference is the field configuration.
It seems that the upgrade has a problem with this field. I upgraded 8.0.1 client with basic settings and it worked. Another 8.0.1 client failed with missing kit message. By switching the configuration setting to standard it worked. Strange.
So I made a copy of the kit-document and activated the standard setting. You have to set the type of installation switch again because it is cleared. The destination version has to be the same. After this both clients worked.
